Caroline J. Berdzik Quoted in “Are Nursing Homes’ High-Need Residents at High Risk?” The Columbus Dispatch January 26, 2014

Caroline J. Berdzik, chair of Goldberg Segalla’s Health Care Practice Group and co-chair of its Labor and Employment Practice Group, was recently interviewed by The Columbus Dispatch on the issue of high-need residents in nursing homes, including registered sex offenders or individuals with developmental disabilities. As Caroline explained, it is a complicated topic.

“The issue both of housing these offenders and of notifying others is complex,” Caroline told the Dispatch. “It raises all sorts of ethical dilemmas. And there are no clear parameters, no best practices, established across the country on how to best handle this. … These folks are there because they need medical attention. The bottom line is that they deserve quality care, too.”

Caroline advises long-term care providers to develop a policy for handling such situations.
