Matthew C. Van Vessem Quoted in "Law Limits Right of Unpaid Interns to Sue," Buffalo Law Journal October 28, 2013

Matthew C. Van Vessem, Co-Chair of Goldberg Segalla’s Labor and Employment Practice Group, was quoted extensively in a Buffalo Law Journal article examining the recent Southern District of New York decision in Wang v. Phoenix Satellite Television U.S. Inc. The court’s ruling raised questions because it highlighted what many see as a legal loophole: Unpaid interns, because they do not fall into the legal definition of an employee, are not protected by the statutes that outlaw sexual harassment in the workplace.

“This is the state of the law in New York,” Matt told the Buffalo Law Journal. “The federal and state courts have made determinations over the years that unpaid interns aren’t covered under Title 7 or New York state law for this kind of case.”
