Goldberg Segalla Managing Partner Richard J. Cohen received the 2017 Buffalo 612’ Award, an honor reserved for only 11 executives, recognizing his creation and visionary leadership of the fastest organically growing law firm in the United States.

Established in 2012 by Business First, the Buffalo 612’ Award — named for Buffalo’s elevation above sea level — honors the leading C-Level executives of businesses based in Western New York. The award is unique in that it honors not only the most prominent leaders, but also the most “effective” executives — “the ones who know how to navigate the obstacles, see clearly through the clouds, and ultimately lead the way,” according to Business First. All of the honorees must possess “a blend of vision, problem-solving ability, communication skills, and perseverance.”

This year’s roster of honorees include the area’s leading executives in the health care, entertainment, insurance, banking, arts, and nonprofit sectors. Goldberg Segalla’s Rick Cohen is one of only two law firm managing partners honored, and the only founding partner of a company to make the list.

In 2001, Cohen, along with founding partners Neil A. Goldberg, Thomas F. Segalla, Albert J. D’Aquino, John P. Freedenberg, and Cheryl A. Possenti, left a successful career at another firm to form Goldberg Segalla as a startup. Recognizing many other regional and national firms as “dysfunctional,” Cohen envisioned and created a “different” sort of law firm — one that put collaboration, professionalism, and client service at the heart of the firm’s culture.
