Matthew R. Shindell Featured in "Did You Know? Learn More About Toxic Materials and Counterfeit Products," People to People: Working Together for Your Safety September 24, 2013

Matthew R. Shindell, special counsel in Goldberg Segalla’s Product Liability and Risk and Litigation Avoidance Strategies Practice Groups, was a guest on People to People: Working Together for Your Safety to discuss the legal implications for manufacturers and distributors of the proliferation of counterfeit electronic parts into the supply chain.

Although there is a broad awareness of the dangers of counterfeit parts and the injuries that can occur as a result of their failure, Matt notes, “Few companies or individuals really take the time to assess the business risks related to this problem, and they don’t really formulate adequate mitigation, detection, or authentication programs.”

In this segment (beginning at the 24:00 mark), Matt discusses the importance of implementing inspection, testing, and authentication procedures in order to avoid or minimize the risk of facing harsh financial penalties — and potentially criminal charges — associated with unknowingly distributing counterfeit parts. He also addresses new standards coming into play not only for military contractors, but also for those in the aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle industries, to help prevent these dangers.
