Reed M. Podell

Goldberg Segalla added special counsel Reed M. Podell to the firm’s General Liability practice group in Manhattan.

A civil litigator with over 20 years of experience, Reed defends property owners, contractors, architects, engineers, and other insureds in high-exposure matters. He regularly handles matters involving New York State Labor Law §§ 200, 240[1], and 241[6] claims; actions involving alleged design defects and other professional liability claims; premises liability; and automobile liability, including commercial automobile accidents. His track record includes numerous successful appeals. In addition, he has significant experience in obtaining favorable results in matters involving risk-transfer, contractual liability, and subrogation, and has written and presented on the subject. His previous experience includes serving as a partner at two large insurance defense panel firms, where he was responsible for representing insureds in automobile accident, premises liability, and Labor Law matters.

Active with the New York State Bar Association Torts, Insurance, and Compensation Law Section and with a Martindale-Hubbell Peer-Review Rating of AV-Preeminent, Reed is highly regarded in the legal and insurance communities. Among his many successful and notable results, Podell argued a case to the New York State Court of Appeals that presented an issue of first impression: whether undocumented aliens can recover lost wage damages in personal injury actions. He has written and presented on the implications of the decision in this case—Balbuena v. IDR Realty—and was invited by New York Law School to judge a moot court competition with a fact pattern based upon his appeal. Reed earned his J.D. at New York Law School and his bachelor’s at Brooklyn College.
