Mass timber is “cost-effective and requires little energy to manufacture”—part of the reason that the building material is gaining popularity and helping to drive the construction industry’s recovery following the initial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Goldberg Segalla’s Maura F. Krause told Smart Cities Dive.

The publication interviewed Maura, a LEED-certified professional and a partner in Goldberg Segalla’s Construction practice, for insight into mass timber, trends in building design and construction, and the impact of former Vice President Joe Biden’s $2 trillion climate plan, which focuses on renewable energy and electrification and an end to carbon-based electrical generation by 2035.

“Biden has a pretty aggressive plan for a modern and sustainable infrastructure that he plans to put in place immediately upon coming into office. And if it is put in place, it’s going to have a very real impact on green construction and green materials,” Maura said. “While many seem to be skeptical of how the changes that come with the green plan could be possible in a four-year term, just take a look at how fast we adapted to change in a five-month period due to COVID-19.
