Caroline J. Berdzik‘s remarks were covered by Business Insurance following her session addressing sexual abuse in the health care industry at Professional Liability Underwriting Society’s (PLUS) recent Healthcare and Medical Professional Liability Symposium. During her session, Caroline, who chairs the firm’s Health Care and Employment and Labor practices and is a partner in its Long-Term Care and Management and Professional Liability practices, discussed the context surrounding the rise in sexual abuse claims, including several recent high-profile cases that have led to increasing public demand for the criminalization of this type of conduct and legislatures passing bills that extend the statute of limitations for when these claims can be filed. “No entity is immune to these types of claims,” Caroline said.

Caroline also offered proactive solutions for organizations and individuals to reduce exposure in the event of a claim of sexual abuse, highlighting the importance of listening to employees. “Get a ground-level idea of what’s going on from the people who are actually doing the work,” she recommended. “Transparency is key.”
