Joseph M. Hanna Quoted in “NHL Head’s Strong Dismissal of CTE Link Could Be a Mistake,” Law360
Joseph M. Hanna, Goldberg Segalla partner and Sports and Entertainment Practice Group Chair, provided commentary to Law360 following news that National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman recently dismissed the connection between chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive degenerative disease of the brain, and hockey.
“It appears Bettman still believes concussions, and, in particular, their link to more serious brain trauma is still a fresh, new and developing issue, which is odd considering it’s been in motion pictures, news, sports media, etc. for years and years now,” Joe told Law360.
In a letter to a U.S. senator on the issue, Bettman said there is a lack of scientific certainty linking the sport to CTE. The release of the letter comes as the NHL faces legal challenges from former players on the effect of repeated head injuries and concussions.
