Michael Hamilton Analyzes Iran War’s Impact on Event Coverage

Goldberg Segalla partner and leader of the firm’s Global Insurance Services team in Pennsylvania, Michael A. Hamilton, was quoted in Law360 discussing how the Iran war could affect insurance coverage for major sports and entertainment events worldwide.

In the article, “Iran War Poses Coverage Challenges for Event Organizers,” reporter Eli Flesch examines how ongoing geopolitical tensions may prompt insurers to raise premiums, tighten coverage terms, or withdraw from certain markets altogether. Several high-profile motorsports events in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have already been canceled, raising questions about coverage for event-related losses.

The prevalence of war exclusions, which are common in standard insurance policies, may leave policyholders without coverage for disruption-related expenses.

“Some carriers may not want to write in those areas anymore,” Michael says. “Some carriers might want to put in exclusions for losses that occur in certain countries.”

The article also explores how these concerns could extend to future international events, including the upcoming World Cup to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Coverage disputes could arise if insurers invoke terrorism exclusions, particularly where questions of state involvement or proxy actors are involved.

“It’s all going to depend on the wording, and those exclusions kind of run the gamut in terms of how broad they are or how limited they are in their scope,” Michael says.
