NLJ 500 Shows Goldberg Segalla Saw Fastest Natural Growth of Any Firm Among Top 125

June 26, 2019

Goldberg Segalla posted a 25.10-percent growth rate in 2018, according to the NLJ 500—higher than any other firm that hadn’t undertaken a merger or acquisition among the NLJ’s top 125.

The National Law Journal’s survey of the 500 largest law firms in the United States placed Goldberg Segalla at number 112, according to attorney headcount. The survey saw overall growth of 2.5 percent in 2018—exactly a tenth of Goldberg Segalla’s increase—and noted that the vast majority of firms saw gains in “the low single digits.” Far more remarkable than Goldberg Segalla’s growth alone is how it occurred: naturally, without any merger or large acquisition, one lawyer at a time.

GS: Historic Growth Story

Goldberg Segalla debuted on the NLJ 500 in 2012, two years after making the National Law Journal’s Midsize “Hot List.” In 2013 the firm entered the NLJ 250, and the annual ranking recognized Goldberg Segalla to be the fourth-fastest-growing law firm nationally and the third-fastest-growing firm in New York State. And in 2017, Law360 profiled Goldberg Segalla as the firm that grew fastest without undertaking a merger.

In late 2018 and early 2019 Goldberg Segalla Managing Partner Richard J. Cohen spoke with Law.com (an ALM publication, like the National Law Journal) and the Buffalo Law Journal, looking back on a year of growth that saw the addition of 108 lawyers and three new offices, with the firm’s total attorney headcount surpassing 400. Now, the 2019 NLJ 500 confirms that in 2018 Goldberg Segalla grew faster than any other law firm in the country.
