Janessa Chamlee: ‘The Greatest Impact We Make is the Way We Connect with People’

October 9, 2025

Janessa Chamlee knew from an early age that she wanted to pursue a career in the legal profession, a field she believed would provide her the opportunity to help people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

In fact, so passionate was she about this dream while growing up that her family bestowed upon her the nickname ‘Johnnie Cochran Jr.’

“I’ve always had a passion for law and just sticking up for what is right,” said Janessa, now in her 22nd year as a paralegal. “What keeps me motivated is knowing that my work makes a real difference. Most clients are often going through really difficult times when they need an attorney and being able to lighten their burden is deeply rewarding. Being a paralegal means being a bridge between clients, attorneys, and the legal system. It’s about using your knowledge, being empathetic, and organized to ensure justice is served fairly and efficiently.”

As a paralegal in Goldberg Segalla’s Orlando office, Janessa assists Michael E. Memberg, a partner in the firm’s Workers’ Compensation practice group. In that role, she works with Michael in every stage of a Worker’s Comp case, from managing client communications, filing state board records, and preparing discovery to coordinating depositions and acting as the point of contact for clients.

“I approach each case with persistence, respect, and the belief that no matter how difficult the challenge, there is a way forward,” said Janessa, adding that her attitude and work ethic are the byproducts of the lessons she learned from her grandfather.

“My grandfather has made the biggest impact on my professional journey,” Janessa said. “He and many other family members fled Cuba when Castro came into power, and they started from scratch in a new country. Knowing what he had to go through for his family showed me his courage, his resilience and work ethic, which taught me to never take opportunities for granted and to always approach my work with determination and integrity. I carry those lessons into my work every day.”

Working from that foundation, Janessa prioritizes client service, treating each person the firm represents with the utmost empathy and respect.

“As a paralegal, I am the middleman between the clients and attorneys. I make sure I listen carefully so that I can translate any worries or concerns clients have. To stay informed about a client’s business, and support the team better, I do research not only on the client’s claim, but also the broader industry trends that affect their situation.

“I’ve been told my superpower seems to be my organization, especially when under pressure. No matter how many moving parts there are, I can quickly bring order to chaos and make sure nothing slips through the cracks while juggling everything. My goal is to be a consistent guide through a client’s Worker’s Comp claim.”

Janessa said she believes her commitment to client-first service sets her apart from others in the field. Looking back on one particular case from early in her career on which she was assigned to help, Janessa recalled:

“It was very heavy, it was very stressful, and the client wanted to give up several times just because of how daunting everything was. I became her advocate, and I was there to reassure her. I explained everything each step of the way and encouraged her and just let her know her case was moving forward. She was so thankful because the matter ended in a positive outcome, and it felt good because she was so thankful and showed her gratitude for the fact that I was her advocate. That reminded me that the greatest impact we make is not just in the paperwork, but in the way that we connect with people.”

Janessa’s ability to thrive in her job, she said, has been enhanced by the work environment fostered by the firm itself.

“I believe what sets Goldberg Segalla apart from other firms, especially ones that I’ve worked at, is the culture of collaboration and respect. Everyone here, from partners to every department team member, is committed to working as a team, which creates a supportive environment for both clients and employees, especially new employees as myself. That sense of unity is extremely rare and very meaningful.”

Just as critical, Janessa said, is Goldberg Segalla’s commitment to diversity, ensuring attorneys and staff from traditionally underrepresented communities are provided opportunities to advance in their careers and be heard.

“Representation of Hispanic Latino professionals in the legal support field has absolutely grown from where it was when I came into the field, but there is still room for more Hispanic Latino voices, especially in leadership roles. I think it’s important for younger generations to see themselves represented because it shows that they too belong in the profession and can thrive in it.”

Which is why Janessa said she is grateful Goldberg Segalla makes it a priority to recognize and celebrate months like Hispanic Heritage Month.

“Again, it goes back to my grandfather and my ancestors that came over from Cuba,” she said. “It’s very important to be able to celebrate those who have come over from their countries and made something of themselves. It’s very important to me.”
