President Joseph R. Biden Honors Joseph M. Hanna with Lifetime Achievement Award
It is our extraordinary honor to announce that President Joseph R. Biden has awarded Joseph M. Hanna the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest civil volunteerism award presented by the President of the United States.
The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award was established in 2003 by executive order by President George W. Bush for individuals who have volunteered more than 4,000 hours of service to communities across the country. It was established after September 11 to recognize the service and civic contributions of Americans to their communities and country, and is the highest honor in the President’s Volunteer Service Award system.
For more than 13 years, Joe has volunteered his time and talents to help U.S. servicemen and women find recreation and rehabilitation from injuries through the game of golf via Bunkers in Baghdad, the nonprofit organization he established. Since 2008, Bunkers has collected and shipped 13 million golf balls and 1 million clubs to U.S. soldiers, veterans and wounded warriors in 75 countries and all 50 states. In addition, “Bunkers Buddies” programs in 1,600 schools engage children and young adults, helping them find meaningful ways to show their appreciation for our troops by decorating golf balls and creating heartfelt letters and cards. Bunkers Buddies also hold fundraisers and golf equipment drives to support our troops.
