The American College of Coverage and Extracontractual Counsel (ACCEC), formed in 2012 by leading lawyers in the United States and Canada to improve the quality of the practice of insurance law, recently hit a milestone: 100 members.

“Our growing membership base is remarkably active and passionate,” says College President Thomas F. Segalla, a partner in Goldberg Segalla’s Global Insurance Services Practice Group. “Even as we grow, we have made sure not to lose sight of ACCEC’s focus: representing the interests of both insurers and policyholders in order to increase civility and professionalism in our field. Ultimately, this results in better representation for all of our clients.”

The College focuses on the creative, ethical, and efficient adjudication of disputes between policyholders and insurers over insurance coverage as well as extracontractual damages. Its mission includes educating all sectors involved in insurance disputes — including the judiciary, legal and insurance professionals, and businesses — on critical topics such as best practices in policy formation and claims handling, developing trends in insurance law, and bad faith.

The College engages in a wide variety of activities, including seminars and the sharing of scholarship, in order to promote its goals. It held its first annual meeting in Chicago in May, which organizers say proved to be a tremendous success, and a key step in advancing ACCEC’s mission.
