Goldberg Segalla Is Nation’s Fourth-Fastest Growing Law Firm, Third-Fastest in New York

Firm Cracks NLJ 250 Mark and Enters NYLJ 100

Just days after The National Law Journal’s annual NLJ 350 survey of the nation’s largest law firms showed Goldberg Segalla to be the fourth-fastest growing law firm in the country, the New York Law Journal saw the firm enter its statewide NYLJ 100 for the first time, with a positive growth rate that ranked third in the state. The lists, published in June 2013, ranked law firms based on their 2012 full-time-equivalent attorney headcount.

In its 12-year history, Goldberg Segalla has grown completely organically from seven founding partners plus a small support staff to a team of more than 330, including over 170 lawyers, in its 11 offices in the United States and the United Kingdom. While other firms continued to scale back through the recession, Goldberg Segalla experienced growth across all offices — and that expansion has continued with a number of prominent additions in its Manhattan and London offices and beyond.

That growth was evident on the NLJ 350: Goldberg Segalla saw a positive 27.2 percent change from 2011 to 2012, moving up 67 spots to No. 249 from No. 316. Only three firms in the country had a higher growth rate in 2012 — but, as Goldberg Segalla Managing Partner Richard J. Cohen notes, the firm’s accelerated growth in 2013 means that the 2012 numbers don’t even begin to tell the story.

“Given our growth across our footprint so far in the first half of this year,” Mr. Cohen said, “I strongly believe we are the fastest organically growing firm in the country. And by the end of this year, we project to jump significantly on the NLJ 350 rankings.”

In the NYLJ 100 rankings, Goldberg Segalla was one of only nine firms to experience net gains in New York State attorney headcount by more than 10 percent from 2011 to 2012. Its growth by 29 percent — to 121 New York-based lawyers — led to a ranking of No. 75. In fact, Goldberg Segalla experienced the third-highest net gain of any firm on the list.

“Everyone at Goldberg Segalla believes in and contributes to the new model of practicing law that we’ve created, and we think that’s what attracts such distinguished and talented attorneys to our firm,” Mr. Cohen continued. “It is a testament to our teamwork-focused culture that as we vaulted up these lists, we also were named one of the 20 Best Companies to Work For in the State of New York and the Best Place to Work in Western New York among large companies by two different independent surveys. That means we are growing the right way — something we feel is critical to giving our clients the best possible service.”
